Commitment to Scholarly Excellence
The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requires internal medicine residents to demonstrate participation in scholarly activity prior to completing their training. At Providence St. Mary, we go beyond meeting this requirement — we provide a comprehensive curriculum designed to foster intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and research skills essential for evidence-based medicine.
Research Opportunities and Support
Our program requires each resident to complete an activity that results in a presentation, poster, or publication. To support residents, we offer a robust scholarly activity curriculum featuring:
- Lectures & Workshops – Focused on research design, data collection, and analysis.
- Hands-On Learning – Practical experience applying research methodologies.
- Case Studies – Real-world examples that connect clinical care with research outcomes.
-
Asynchronous Learning – Flexible, self-paced resources for independent study.
Scholarly Activity Lecture Series
Our protected academic half-day includes a dedicated Scholarly Activity Lecture Series, providing residents with training on:
- Research topic selection and proposal development
- Literature review and evidence synthesis
- Data collection and statistical analysis
- Scientific writing and abstract preparation
- Presenting at conferences and publishing findings
Additionally, third-year residents receive a dedicated rotation block to finalize their projects and prepare for dissemination.

Building Future Leaders in Evidence-Based Medicine
Our scholarly activity requirement helps residents develop a deeper understanding of research principles and their application to patient-centered care. By fostering intellectual curiosity and providing hands-on research experience, we prepare our graduates to become leaders in evidence-based medicine and contributors to the advancement of clinical knowledge.
