Preparing Residents to Lead in Primary Care

Our program is designed to shape future leaders in internal medicine who are committed to advancing health equity and improving care for medically underserved populations. With Apple Valley’s diverse patient community, residents gain first-hand experience addressing healthcare disparities while developing the knowledge and skills needed to provide high-quality care across settings.

A Primary Care-Focused Curriculum

Our unique 4+1 curriculum structure offers residents one-week blocks of continuity ambulatory clinics every fifth week, ensuring consistent patient interaction and fostering long-term care relationships. These immersive experiences are supplemented with:

  • Required ambulatory clinical rotations
  • Subspecialty outpatient training
  • Exposure to diverse practice models, from hospital-owned clinics to population-based community health centers

This approach ensures that graduates are fully equipped to practice in any primary care setting with confidence and competence.

Key Benefits of Our Primary Care Initiatives

Promoting Health Equity

Research shows that strong primary care systems improve patient outcomes and drive a more equitable distribution of healthcare. Training in Apple Valley provides residents with a unique opportunity to confront healthcare disparities directly while delivering comprehensive, community-based care.

Building Meaningful Patient Relationships

One of the most rewarding aspects of primary care medicine is the ability to form longitudinal, trust-based relationships with patients. Our curriculum emphasizes continuity of care, allowing residents to follow patients through multiple phases of their lives and provide treatment aligned with each patient’s values, goals, and needs.

A Supportive, Collaborative Learning Environment

Our faculty is deeply committed to resident growth and professional development. As passionate advocates for primary care, they mentor residents through hands-on training, career guidance, and leadership development. The close-knit community of colleagues and mentors extends far beyond residency, providing ongoing support throughout each resident’s career.

Training Versatile, Whole-Person Physicians

We strive to provide an integrated ambulatory care experience that prepares residents to manage diverse patient populations and complex health conditions. The wide range of clinical settings and patient demographics in Apple Valley allows graduates to confidently adapt to any primary care environment. By training versatile, compassionate internists, we aim to create meaningful change in an evolving healthcare system.
